When hiring a new employee, checking their references is an absolute must. It doesn’t matter if Uncle Joe vouches for them or your best friend refers them to you. That’s just not good enough. With many surveys suggesting that as many as 56% of job applicants supply âincorrect information in significant areas,â? on their resumes and applications, checking their references thoroughly is a no-brainer.
Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call a former boss and ask for a âpersonalâ? reference. This may sidestep any reluctance to provide an âofficialâ? account for which the former company may be liable. Also, feel free to request transcripts from educational institutions, and run a background and credit check if the job calls for it.  If you are worried about running afoul of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), don’t be. It only controls third party checks, not your own.
