Have you started a home-based business? Are you aware that you need to make sure you are complying with local, state and federal regulations? As hard as it may be to believe, just because you provide consulting via email out of your home, it’s still better to check out what regulations affect you. Why? Because you could incur fines for being without a business license and it may throw up a huge roadblock if you decide to grow your business.
Regulations and rules vary by different industries.  Food service businesses will need to check with the health department, for example. Failure to comply with regulations that affect your business could cause you legal problems, penalties and potentially shut down your business.
Check with your local city, county and state web sites to verify business license information. There are a number of different types of licenses, you need to check for what type of license you need to obtain. If you live within a city’s limits, your license will likely come from the city. Outside the city, you will likely apply to the county.
Take the time to do the web searches related to your local area on licenses and regulations. In states where you file state taxes, your income cited to a personal business will be reported to the local county and city. If you lack a license, there is a chance the city will fine you for reporting income from an unlicensed business.
