The Aberdeen News is reporting that insurance companies in South Dakota will not be forced to cover birth control pills and other contraceptives. A bill that would have required that coverage was killed by the House Commerce Committee.A SD Division of Insurance official and insurance lobbyists told legislators that HB1183 would not only increase the cost of policies for employers and individuals but also could force some insurers to leave the state.
Bob Riter, a business lobbyist, said enactment of a law requiring contraceptive coverage would increase the cost of insurance for employers. He warned that it also could cause some employers to discontinue health insurance for workers.
