A recent study by the Enterprise Center at Salem State College found that sole proprietor businesses in the state of Massachusetts are being undercounted. Their report found that sole proprietor businesses are typically not counted as part of Massachusetts’ employment data. That means that there are approximately 17%, or approximately 424,172, people who are receiving little or no attention in the business sector.
The research also indicated that the sector in Massachusetts with the largest number of sole proprietors and micro-businesses (those with four or fewer employees) are professional, scientific and technical services.
